Hey Everyone! Today I wanted to share my five tips for working from home. I have been using these tips for my travel business, for coaching people who want to be in the travel business, and for my other job in the health industry when I work from home to stay productive.
1. Create a Work Space Creating a designated work space is especially helpful if you are used to working in an office and having a specific routine. Some people can sit and work anywhere but for others you may need a more structured area to help tell your brain that you are “at work.” For me personally, I have a few different work spaces depending on what business I am working on. We have a desktop computer and desk that I use when I need to work on specifically large files of editing. Being at an actual desk also helps me feel like I am in my normal work setting for what I do in the health industry. When I work my travel business I tend to mix up my space. I will work at the desk, on the couch or floor from my laptop, on my phone, or sometimes I will use my guest bedroom. Luckily, my travel business is very flexible in where I work. Basically you have to find what really works for you! Some people need that work space and some do not. Try a few different spaces until it feels right. Let us know what works for you. 2. Set a Schedule I have found that when you do not normally work from home, or even if you do normally work from home setting a schedule to keep you consistent helps. When are you most productive? Set your schedule around when you can be the most productive and uninterrupted. For me that is in the morning. Also, keeping a consistent schedule helps keep your mind and body in a “work” focused mode. When I do work my job in the health industry from home those are more specific hours and needs of working 8 hours in a day. I personally make sure that I take my 15 minute breaks and my lunch time like I normally would. I start my day the same by checking emails and calendar for the day. While working my travel business, it depends on the day. During the weekends, I usually set aside just a few hours in the morning to do anything that may need to be done such as quotes, follow-ups, training and creating blog or social media content. During the weekdays, I am flexible with my schedule as it really depends on what type of demand I have for clients and team members. Week nights there is always at least one evening I have set aside to do weekly calls with my coach and with my team. Every person and every business has a different type of schedule that works for them. Some people have their schedule set by the hour, by the day, or by the week. Think about how flexible your schedule can be and if you want it to be flexible. You also need to keep in mind how much work you need to get done and how long that should take you. 3. Create a List Once you figure out how much work you need to get done and how long that should take you, I personally like to create a list. I used to do this daily but found for me I keep a Monthly or Quarterly list of things I need to work on and their due dates. I use an excel spreadsheet to keep myself organized. I open this list up each day, make sure it is accurate, and get started. As I complete projects, I cross them off the list. 4. Stay on Task Anyone else get easily distracted? No, just me? I have found that working from home gives you easy distractions that you do not have when working in an office or elsewhere. Notice that the dishes need to be done or that you could just take a minute to pick up that table…. These are not normal distractions that you would have at the office. Again, going back to having the designated work space will help with this and so will the schedule. I have had to make sure that home things only get done on official breaks or after work, just like it normally would. If need be take a moment to write those down, so you can just stop thinking about them. Do you have anything that helps keep you on task or focused? Like I shared earlier, I prefer to have lists of things I need to get done and if I am really having a hard time focusing I take a stretch break or put on some piano music. What do you do to stay focused and on task when working from home? 5. Take Breaks Taking breaks are essential to doing your best work, but do not let them take over your entire day! Do what you would normally do at work, set up two 15 minute breaks and a lunch time (if that is normal for you). Don’t normally take those 15 minute breaks, then start taking short 2-5 minute breaks once every few hours to stretch your body, or do short walks. Normally at the office you would end up walking a lot farther to the bathroom than you do at home, give yourself that time to stretch and move your body.
